Happy New Year!

Share

Hope you all have a wonderful and safe New Year's Eve!

Vandy PSA:  If you post Twitters to your LJ and don't LJcut them, I will remove you from my friends list so I don't have to see those posts.  They really clutter up my friends page and since they usually don't make any sense aside from the people who were having the conversation, I don't need to see it.  Kthx.

It's a major pet peeve of mine.  Those are usually 1 on 1 conversations so why would you share them with the world, especially your LJ, where many of your readers may not follow Twitter?

Last month, someone created a mod in Half Life 2 (a very popular PC game) that simulates the Tower of Terror. It's a very well done mod. Check it out! Note that it's a first-person shooter so if you're susceptible to motion sickness from these types of games, be warned.

Still in CA. Real post to come later...

TX, here I come!

Share
me with a 70's flair
Unless the Dept of Fish & Game has a sudden change of heart after signing the permits and whatnot, my property is sold and I'll be moving to TX on or around 5/19.

I'll be online sporadically from now until after we get settled in TX since I'll be working, packing, looking for houses, or moving.

For my Sac friends, we're still planning a goodbye gather on 5/4 but we don't have any details set yet. We should have something figured out soon.

If you can't make it on 5/4 but still want to say toodles, let me know and we can try to figure something out. Please understand that my time is becoming extremely scarce but I'll make every effort to meet up with you.

I hope to have a better, faster internet connection in TX so that online gaming will be an option for me again. We'll see how that goes.

Thanks for the memories, CA. It's been a fun 21 years but it's time for a change (I moved to CA in 1986 from Guam when my dad was reassigned to Moffett Field in Mountain View). You're too expensive for us to build our dream house here so adios. We love the weather but hate the expenses.

I'll be back in April 2008 for my cousin's wedding but that'll be in San Diego. Toodles!

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Dear Relic Entertainment,

Please keep making Real-Time Strategy games for the PC.

Wuvs,
V

Dude, Company of Heroes is the best Real Time Strategy game evar! They took the awesome engine used in WH40K: Dawn of War and pimped it out with higher graphics and made it all WW2-sy. Result: Game of the year. Taking Omaha Beach was nuts and the transitions between prerendered cutscenes and in-engine cutscenes was just about transparent. Well done, Relic!

Tough on the hardware though. My gaming rig is an X2-4800 dual core CPU, 2 GB RAM, 2x7900GT in SLI, and Audigy2 Platinum and with AA on and all GFX setting at the max at 1280x1024 resolution, I can only manage a "Good" rating in the performance test with avg FPS of 40, max 127, and min 15. Pretty brutal.

Went to a Serenity/Firefly-themed wedding yesterday. Pics will be posted and we had a grand ol' time at the shindig!

My office is 90% done. I just need to hang the can lighting under the shelves and install my printer when it arrives and it'll be complete. Pics coming...

My Dodgers got swept by the despised Mets and now I owe my brother a hat. How lame is that? Tee hee...

Kids' rig is all done and, man, is that thing is fast. 7900GS + Opteron 148 + 1 GB RAM = gaming goodness!

... is that they encourage being mobile or working remotely, if your job allows it. That means that I can work anywhere there is an internet connection. IBM tools are very robust in this arena so I vary my workplace between several coffee shops, bookstores, other public areas, and friends' homes. I come into the office only when necessary.

Like right now... I'm at a coffee joint but attended a few meetings and got a bunch of work done without the drama of the office.

Anyhoo, hope y'all are doing well.

So I caught a fever at Rio de Janeiro/Ipanema last weekend. I'm quite miserable and need the Portuguese version of Nyquil so that I can get some sleep. I've got some Dayquil but it's not enough to help me sleep. I've got a vicious headache and high fever. This is some really bad timing because this is such an important weekend at work but I can't go in and risk making everyone else sick.

A thin-client PC that is small enough to fit on a wall-socket? Wowza!

Some article excerpts:
"This can be used as a standard PC on standard power," MacLellan told ZDNet UK, "or it can be used with power-over-Ethernet, and that really makes it efficient."

A basic Jack PC costs £209 without monitor or keyboard. At a low price and using low power, MacLellan believes the device is "one of the biggest developments in PCs that we have seen" and is one of the "ever-growing range of thin clients, which are rapidly replacing PCs as a more effective desktop computing solution for modern businesses".

The Jack PC runs Windows CE, is designed to connect to "any terminal server-based environment" and has Citrix ICA and Microsoft RDP clients built in.

It runs Internet Explorer 6.0 to connect to Web-driven applications, and runs an "up to 500MHz" AMD RISC processor, which the company says is equivalent to a 1.2GHz x86. It can come with up to 64MB of flash memory and 128MB RAM.

Analogue or digital monitors are supported, and the system can include support for dual-screen and 16:9 screens. It has four USB 2.0-compatible ports, 16-bit audio in/out and support for 24-bit (true colour), 1280x1024 graphics. The Jack PC will also support wireless connectivity.

Anyone want some parakeets?

Share
me with a 70's flair
I've got 3 parakeets (two blue/white and one yellow/green) in a large cage that we need to get rid of. They'll come with toys, food, and the cage. No idea what sex they are as we rescued them a few years ago. They're not hand trained but are your typical parakeets that chirp, play, and chase each other around the cage. If you want them, they're yours. Let me know and I'll meet you where you are to offload them.

Thanks!
